so i went from drawing, to painting.
back in the old days, those were the steps to take.
you would lean to draw by drawing from still lives, and then by drawing sculpture, once you mastered tones, you could move onto drawing from a model. once you mastered drawing, you moved onto painting.
painting was often called “coloring” back in those times because that’s what it was.
an underpainting was done (look up underpainting and davinci), and once the tones where realized, the paint would be glazed on. from there they built up the paint and glazes. that’s how many famous works were created.
(that was all in very loose terms, and the most basic of explanations i could have offered… but whatever)
so i decided to do three paintings, all different techniques and learn a little.
the past few months have been all about drawing, and i’ve learned quite a bit, and i’ve improved tons.
so why not the same for painting?
the first one i did i began with a graphite drawing. i did a wash of color, and went on to built up the tones with white. i liked how it looked, so i left it. taught myself how to use a brush, and the value of white.
the 2nd one i got reff. online and photoshoped them together to create a picture, and i did a drawing based off of it. i decided to paint gas masks. i went about this in more of a sketchy study method of painting. i did the shadows first in blue, and i did glaze after glaze and used white to build up the highlights. taught myself color theory in paint, how to make things almost glow, glaze techniques, and surface importance.
the third painting i wanted to keep simple. i mixed surfaces to break out of a comfort zone, and i got thicker with the paint. i used more than just a few colors, layering them on eachother to create value. i learned alot about tools, color theory, surface, texture with oil paint, and scans of oil paintings.
i decided to do a forth painting, even though i had reached my goal of three.
it began as a portrait of a girls face i found online. the shadows and such where a challenge to me, just starting out. around this time “the Remberant Book” ( a huge book all about rembrant) showed up to my door. i was having tons of trouble with the painting, and decided to take a break. so after reading 80% of the thing, and staring at the pictures for hours, i decided to go back and take a look at a current artist who loves rembrant, Odd Nerdrum. i had chosen him to copy for a school project, and i didn’t really pull it off (myself, knowing nothing much about painting), but now i could better grasp the techniques and methods he used.
i love the way Nerdrum paints. it’s one of the coolest things i’ve ever seen. so i started to stare at his art. (as i feel everybody should.) Using what i gathered from both of these painters (rembrant and nerdrum), i fixed the portrait of the young girl. i changed it drasticly to have some fun with it, and that pushed me to create one of the more darker images of my lifetime thus far.
i have found a way of painting that really grabs me. everything about it makes sense to me, and i find each step fun. the best part of it all is, everything is only as good as the drawing beneath it. which means i must first create a crazy good drawing as a foundation. this can be simple linework, all the way to fully fleshed out tones that i glaze over.
i plan to do many more paintings this month… i hope to get atleast 5 new works done for next first friday, and a huge epic painting done for septembers first friday. so please, come check out my work. i’m proud to show off my journey.
this first friday, i’m taking two boards at the twisted system art gallery show in the chiro office on prince street in lancaster, Pa.
i’ll be showing nine works… four paintings (the ones described above, and shown), and five of my favorite drawings. it’s 3am, and we hang our work at 3pm. i have quite a day ahead of me.
happy 4th.
